The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part 1

The aim of a Backgammon match is to shift your pieces around the Backgammon board and bear them off the game board faster than your opponent who works harder to do the same buthowever they move in the opposing direction. Succeeding in a game in Backgammon requires both strategy and good luck. Just how far you can move your pieces is up to the numbers from tossing a pair of dice, and the way you shift your chips are decided on by your overall playing techniques. Players use a few plans in the differing stages of a match depending on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Plan

The aim of the Running Game plan is to lure all your checkers into your home board and bear them off as quickly as you can. This technique focuses on the speed of shifting your pieces with little or no efforts to hit or stop your competitor’s chips. The best scenario to employ this strategy is when you believe you can shift your own pieces quicker than the opposition does: when 1) you have a fewer chips on the board; 2) all your chips have past your opponent’s chips; or 3) your opponent doesn’t use the hitting or blocking tactic.

The Blocking Game Tactic

The primary goal of the blocking technique, by its name, is to block your competitor’s pieces, temporarily, while not worrying about moving your checkers rapidly. After you have created the blockage for the opponent’s movement with a couple of pieces, you can move your other pieces rapidly off the game board. You should also have a good plan when to extract and move the pieces that you used for blocking. The game gets interesting when your opponent uses the same blocking tactic.
