The Essential Facts of Backgammon Strategies – Part 1

The goal of a Backgammon game is to shift your pieces around the Backgammon board and get those pieces from the game board quicker than your competitor who works harder to achieve the same buthowever they move in the opposing direction. Succeeding in a match of Backgammon needsrequires both strategy and luck. Just how far you can shift your chips is up to the numbers from rolling the dice, and how you shift your checkers are determined by your overall playing tactics. Players use differing techniques in the differing stages of a match depending on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Tactic

The aim of the Running Game strategy is to lure all your checkers into your inner board and bear them off as quickly as you could. This tactic focuses on the speed of shifting your checkers with no time spent to hit or block your opponent’s chips. The best time to use this technique is when you believe you might be able to move your own pieces faster than the opponent does: when 1) you have a fewer pieces on the board; 2) all your chips have moved beyond your opponent’s checkers; or 3) your opposing player does not employ the hitting or blocking strategy.

The Blocking Game Plan

The primary aim of the blocking technique, by the name, is to stop your opponent’s chips, temporarily, not worrying about moving your pieces quickly. Once you have created the blockade for your opponent’s movement with a couple of chips, you can shift your other checkers swiftly from the board. You will need to also have a good strategy when to back off and move the checkers that you used for blocking. The game gets interesting when the opposition utilizes the same blocking strategy.
